  • Why Low Carb, High Fat Diets Eventually Make Type 2 Diabetes Worse 30-01-2018 John Bransby
These days, people living with type 2 diabetes are bombarded with an array of diet options claiming to reverse diabetes or put it into remission. The common theme is to avoid carbs. Carbohydrates are wrongly  demonized as the enemy of diabetics. These diets focus on nearly eliminating carbs and relying on fat and protein as the foods. They range from unsustainable very low calorie diets to the ‘craze’ diets such as Paleo and Ketogenic. Mostly promoted by celebrity chefs with no understanding of nutrition or medical doctors with no training in nutrition, who think the title ‘doctor’ carries unquestionable authority, these diets become fads that don’t get nearly enough scrutiny and cause long term harm.

The Ketogenic diet is probably the most popular ‘craze’ diet going around when it comes to diabetes reversal diets. Does it work?  The answer is ‘yes’ and ‘no’. In the short term the keto diet does often bring blood glucose numbers back into the normal range, so it appears to work and the word soon spreads. However, in the long term it’s a potential disaster. It gradually worsens the condition by worsening insulin sensitivity. Restoring insulin sensitivity is the key to reversing type 2 diabetes. The only diet proven to restore insulin sensitivity is the type we use at Reverse Diabetes. It’s also been proven to reverse other conditions such as cardio vascular disease, which the keto and other low carb diets will worsen over time.

For a truly in-depth explanation of why keto diets don't work longer term and are downright dangerous to one's health, read this 6 part series article by our Board Certified Lifestyle Medicine Practitioner, Robyn Chuter. To understand the importance of insulin sensitivity, listen to Dr Michael Greger MD explain why it’s essential to focus on improving insulin sensitivity in this short VIDEO
